Mr. Robot star Rami Malek is in contract negotiations to star alongside Sons of Anarchy's Charlie Hunnam for a remake of Steve McQueen's 1973 film Papillon.

Hunnam is set to take on the character played by McQueen as to where Malek is being looked at for the character played by Dustin Hoffman, according to Variety. The movie is directed by Michael Noer (Northwest) from a script penned by Prisoners writer Aaron Guzikowski. The movie will begin shooting in September in Belgrade, Montenegro and in Thailand.

Based on the memoirs of a convicted felon and fugitive named Henri Charriere, the movie will be a modern retelling of the original story. Charriere planned an epic escape from the notorious penal colony in French Guiana, South America called Devil's Island. He was a petty criminal from the Parisian underworld, but was wrongly convicted of murder in 1930's France. Charriere offers protection from violent inmates for the oddball counterfeiter Louis Dega (to be played by Malek), who will in exchange finance Charriere's prison escape.

35-year-old actor Rami Malek was recently nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of Elliot on the popular USA series Mr. Robot, and even won a Critics' Choice Award for the role. His other film credits include Night at the Museum, Need for Speed, and The Master. His show Mr. Robot is currently in its second season, and has been receiving vast critical acclaim.

The Red Granite company is backing the Papillon remake with Joey McFarland, Riza Aziz, David Koplan, Ram German and Roger Corbi attached as producers.
