Kate Mara set a fire under fans of the Fantastic Four when she reportedly stated, in an interview with Esquire Latin America, that the upcoming reboot of the film series would not be based on the Fantastic Four comics.

Here's the statement, as translated by IndieWire:

"I've never been a fan of comics, I've never actually read one. I was going to for this movie but the director said it wasn't necessary. Well, actually he told us that we shouldn't do it because the plot won't be based on any history of anything already published. So I chose to follow his instructions. The one fact is I am a fan of comic book movies, so it's very exciting to be part of a movie like this."

Entertainment Weekly has since reached out to Mara, who will play Sue Storm in the film, for an explanation of those comments, and Mara claims that it's a bad translation. She did not say that the film wouldn't be based on any comics, but just that it wouldn't be based on any one comic, instead drawing from the entirety of the Fantastic Four's history.

The film is being intensely scrutinized by fans who are unhappy with certain casting choices and wary of Fox's ability to make a quality Fantastic Four film, given how poorly received their first two attempts were. Maybe Mara's explanation for her previous comments will help cool their tempers a bit, for the time being.

Fantastic Four comes to theaters June 19, 2015.
