Game of Thrones - The Laws of Gods and Men

In a new "Inside the Episode" featurette released by HBO, showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff discuss the key scenes in last night's episode of Game of Thrones, "The Laws of Gods and Men." They first talk about the Iron Bank of Braavos, which was seen by viewers for the first time in last night's episode. "From the moment we read about the Iron Bank in the books," says Weiss, "we loved it because it was such an atypical element of a fantasy world. Banking doesn't really factor into most high fantasy." Benioff explained why they felt that adding the scene of Davos and Stannis going to the bank in Braavos – not present in the books – was important. "The Iron Bank plays an important part in this conflict," he says, "but it's almost always behind the scenes…we haven't seen it yet. So it was important for us to finally get a sense of what this institution is all about." They also discuss Yara's failed rescue of Theon and Tyrion Lannister's trial at King's Landing, explaining Tyrion's final stand against his family by demanding trial by combat. "He threatens Tywin with the one ace up his sleeve," explains Weiss. "If Tyrion dies and Jaime is a Kingsguard then Tywin's direct family line disappears, especially since he knows the trial by combat is going to be an unlikely thing for him to survive." Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 PM ET on HBO.
