Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Speaking to MTV News while promoting his latest film, RoboCop, Gary Oldman revealed some details about the plot of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and his character in the film. Oldman will be playing an ex-police officer who has been elected leader of a small community of humans who survived the plague that broke out at the end of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The community is desperate for power and so they go to explore a power station to see if it is still operational. Once there, the humans discover a whole community of apes living there, which comes as a surprise since they believed they were all wiped out. When Oldman's character and his group find the apes, they plan to finish the job. "There's only one answer for him," said Oldman. "Wipe them out." Oldman explains his character's violent nature as being the result of having experienced great personal loss. Oldman said that he sees his character as the hero of the film, and credited the other cast members and director Matt Reeves for helping him be able to relate to his character's struggles. "[Reeves] wanted to make it more of a human story," said Oldman. "He wanted to explore what had happened, and keep it more focused on the human side of it, before the story becomes the 'Planet of the Apes' as we know it from the original." Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is the sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which rebooted the Planet of the Apes franchise. In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, survivors of the simian plague trigger an all-out war between humanity and Caesar's growing forces. Fox has already put into a production another sequel to follow Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Matt Reeves is signed on to direct. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes comes to theaters July 11, 2014.
