Jack Ryan Could Slip As Low as Fifth Place at Opening Weekend Box Office

is looking to be a big disappointment for Paramount Pictures at the box office. The film, which cost around $60 million to make and stars Star Trek Into Darkness's Chris Pine and Man of Steel's Kevin Costner, was expected to make around $20 million for the three-day weekend and come in third behind Ride Along and Lone Survivor. Instead, it looks like the movie is on pace for a $15-$16 million three-day weekend and $18.6 million including the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday--and will likely come in fifth behind animated offerings The Nut Job and Frozen for the four-day weekend (although it looks to beat Frozen through Sunday). The estimates, via Deadline, have a fairly soft holiday weekend with no movie over $50 million even with three new releases getting a four-day window. Nevertheless, Martin Luther King Day is not typically a big movie weekend and the $40 million+ that Ride Along is expected to bring in would make it the #2 all time opener over the holiday weekend behind J.J. Abrams's Cloverfield. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is the fifth time Tom Clancy's iconic spy character has made the big screen, and Pine is the fourth actor (behind Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck) to play Ryan.
