While Warner Bros. and Legendary haven't formally committed to a Man of Steel sequel yet (the smart money says they're waiting for Comic-Con to make a major announcement there about the future of Superman and other DC Comics properties), Paramount Pictures is so heartened by a strong opening weekend from World War Z that the studio will greenlight a sequel already, says The Hollywood Reporter. The film made $111 million worldwide, marking the largest-ever opening weekend for a Brad Pitt film. His previous best box office opening, not accounting for inflation, was Mr. & Mrs. Smith in summer 2005 to $50.3 million. A year before, in May 2004, Troy opened to $46.9 million, now his third best debut. The movie was expected to open last December, but got shelved due to script problems and a third act that required extensive reshoots. Word around Hollywood for the better part of the last nine months has been that the film would likely turn out to be a flop and the second and third films in the originally-planned trilogy were put on hold while the studio awaited results--which it's apparently pretty happy with now.
