Wish I Was Here character designs

As the controversial Kickstarter campaign to fund Zach Braff's Wish I Was Here entered its final 24 hours earlier today, the filmmaker released the first in a number of video blogs meant for backers and fans--and the only one that will be available to the general public. The film, which takes place partially at Comic-Con, will star The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons, Kick-Ass 2's Donald Faison and Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World's Anna Kendrick alongside Braff, who plays a middle-aged man who uses fantasy stories as a doorway to homeschooling his son. Braff, best known for nine seasons on the NBC/ABC sitcom Scrubs (on which he starred with Faison), has described it as a sequel in spirit to his 2004 directorial debut Garden State, in which he starred alongside Star Wars star Natalie Portman. With 19 hours left to go, the Kickstarter campaign is long since funded, currently sitting at $2.9 million from an original goal of $2 million (which it reached in the first 24 hours).  They're hoping for a $3.5 million stretch goal by 3 p.m. EST tomorrow when the campaign ends. Braff has drawn criticism from media personalities, fans and other artists who don't believe wealthy and successful artists should be turning to crowdfunding to produce their work. He has responded to those complaints via updates on the Kickstarter page and a number of interviews. Braff and company hope to film at San Diego Comic-Con International this year, and will appear at the convention to promote the film, which is expected to be released theatrically and in special online screenings for backers in September 2014.
