Zombieland Creator Blames Hardcore Fans For Pilot's Failure

Hours after news broke that Zombieland was not going to be picked up to series at Amazon, co-creator Rhett Reese (who co-wrote both the feature film version and the series pilot) took to Twitter to blame the movie's hardcore fans for the pilot's failure. "Our Zombieland series will not be moving forward on Amazon. Sad for everyone involved," Reese tweeted. "I'll never understand the vehement hate the pilot received from die-hard Zombieland fans. You guys successfully hated it out of existence." As we noted in our earlier story, the pilot fared pretty well in Amazon reviews overall, but many of the one- and two-star reviews were surprisingly harsh, particularly in the context of a film that has had a strong cult following essentially demanding a sequel or TV spinoff since the day it left theaters. When Amazon passed on the pilot, Deadline reported that it wouldn't be moving forward "at Amazon," the same terminology Reese used in his tweet. Whether that means that they'll try to shop the pilot someplace else or not is an interesting question; as an established property with a dedicated fan base, it seems perfectly suited to Netflix or cable--but certainly Reese lashing out at that same fan base is unlikely to win the series many friends.
