With our new Anticipation Rankings, we can get a sense of how a movie will do with fans before its release date arrives; however, the real measure is what happens when the film is in theaters! With our New Movie Showdown, we will measure how fans are reacting to each new release - and how those movies compare to one another!
This week, we're not doing our usual movie-to-movie comparison, as there is only one major release heading to theaters - and it's no doubt going to own the screen for the next few weeks. We're talking, of course, about Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and really, the only comparison worth making this week is how the sequel will perform against the original Guardians of the Galaxy!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is arriving in US theaters with some strong overseas box office earnings and overwhelmingly glowing reviews (like our own Comicbook.com official review!). Fan anticipation for the film is really high (as you can see below), so there's no expectation that this shouldn't be an easy homerun for Marvel Studios.

For comparison, here are the breakdowns on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1's performance, so you have some idea of what Vol. 2 needs to do in order to suprass it:
- GotG made $94 million domestically on opening weekend; Vol. 2 is projected to earn $140 - 160 million in opening weekend.
- Guardians of the Galaxy landed at a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes; Vol. 2 has hit close (but lower) with an 86%.
- Guardians of the Galaxy's final score in our Comicbook.com Comic Book Movie Rankings was a 4.02/5; Vol. 2's current ranking is a 4.24/5 anticipation score. If that anticipation turns into positive ranking scores, it will likely end up sitting higher in our list of Best Comic Book Movies of all time.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).
