Tom Cruise Comes Face-To-Face With The Mummy In New Image

From what we can gather from the previously-released trailers, Tom Cruise's Nick Mortan is seeking treasure in Egypt, and while he and his partner are under attack, being shot at with rocket launchers, they accidentally unearth Princess Ahmanet's (Sofia Boutella) tomb (actually a prison). Her sarcophagus is put onto a cargo plane and, while in flight, her ancient power awakens, causing the plane to crash. During that zero gravity sequence, Mortan helps Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis) put on a parachute and safely escape, but he's not as lucky as she.

We next see him wake up inside of a body bag. He is neither dead nor alive. He's somewhere in-between. The image below features his first encounter with the evil princess. "They're finally face-to-face," director Alex Kurtzman teased to EW. "He's realizing that he's deeply, and desperately, cursed."

The Mummy is the first film in Universal's shared-universe, so there is no rush to slip in more than one classic monster. "The movie's called The Mummy, not The Mummy Meets 12 Other Monsters," Kurtzman said. "If we create a world that feels interesting and scary, then we will have succeeded in setting up the larger universe."

The cast features Tom Cruise (Jack Reacher, Top Gun), Russell Crowe (The Nice Guys, Gladiator), and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Star Trek Beyond), as well as Courtney B. Vance (The People Vs. O.J. Simpson), Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle, Peaky Blinders), Marwan Kenzari (Ben-Hur), and Jake Johnson (New Girl, Jurassic World).

Alex Kurtzman, the screenwriter and producer behind Star Trek Into Darkness and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, is on board to make his directorial debut, working off of a script penned by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Doctor Strange).
