Captain Marvel: Brie Larson On Capturing "Female Complexity"

When Captain Marvel hits the silver screen in 2019, it will be the first movie from Marvel Studios to feature a female lead. Announced last year at San Diego Comic-Con, actress Brie Larson is slated to portray the film's titular character Carol Danvers and the Oscar-winning actress has been more than excited to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

She's shown pictures of her reading various Captain Marvel comics on Instagram and has interacted with fans about the role on Twitter — but one of the primary reasons she's excited to play Captain Marvel, she says, is to explore the idea "of female complexity" involved in the role.
"Aside from the fact that it's iconic to be part of this, to be playing the first female [lead] in a solo [Marvel] movie, I think for me personally one of the things I'm excited about is the idea of female complexity," Larson told Collider in a recent interview. "That's what I've wanted to bring to every genre and every film that I've done. How can we come to understand the mystique of being female?"
She went on explain that being able to star as the lead in Marvel's first female-featured film is important to her so that she can show that Captain Marvel is just another "girl in an action movie."
"It's not so easy as just saying 'Oh, that's a girl in an action movie; that's a superhero and she's tough and she's just like a dude.' That's too easy. That's not where we're at actually. I think women are far more complicated and more interesting than just saying, 'They're like a dude, and that's what makes them tough and that's what makes them cool.'" Larson reflected. "That's just not how it works, so to me it's this idea of doing this film on this larger scale with really incredible, smart people behind it, with women behind it, that gives you an hour and a half, two hours to sit and see how different a woman can be. That seems cool to me, right?"
While the film still lacks a director, Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman and Oscar-nominated writer Meg LeFauve (Pixar's Inside Out) have been tabbed to pen the script. Outside of her work on Guardians, Perlman currently writes Gamora for Marvel Comics.
