The fate of Steve Rogers, Captain America, in the Marvel Universe is unclear. Chris Evans has starred as the star-spangled avengers in three Captain America movies – Captain America: The First Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Civil War – as well as Marvel's The Avengers and its sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Evans will soon be filming as Captain America for Avengers: Infinity War. When production of that film is complete, he'll have only one film left, Avengers 4, until his contract expires.
Evans has spoken openly about leaving the role of Captain America behind in the past, though he's walked back statements that led fans to believe he was definitely walking away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe when his current contract expired.
However, no actor can play a role indefinitely, not even Captain America, and Evans is well aware of the disappointed fans he'll be leaving behind.
"Bless those people. My mother will be leading that fan base," Evans tells USA Today while promoting his latest movie, Gifted.

Evans goes to say that even he would be sad to leave Captain America's shield behind, but he's looking at the bigger picture.
"I'd be lying if I said it wouldn't be hard for me," says Evans. "But the passing of time and the passing of torches is part of the experience. Nothing lasts forever. There's a beauty in that departure, even if it can be sad at times. It's also joyful.
"I've had a great run," Evans continues. "Superheroes are reinventable entities, like Batman or even James Bond. These movies find new incarnations and new ways to tell the story. I am all for it. However they want to proceed after Avengers 4, it's really up to them. I walk away with no regrets and endlessly thankful."
However, even Evans admits that Marvel Studios would have a hard time reacting or replacing Cap's fellow Avenger and Civil War opponent, Iron Man.
"[Robert Downey Jr.] is far closer to reaching that point where he may walk away. And I don't know how you replace Downey as Tony Stark," says Evans. "I don't know who else can touch that."
One thing Evans won't ever miss about playing a superhero is the workout routine.
"When you're creeping on 36, working out is a little bit harder," he says. "Not impossible, but it just gets a little bit more daunting," says Evans, who laughs about how he'll look post-Captain America. "I'm just going to get fat. Potato chips, ice cream before bed. It's like, 'Guess what, everyone!'"
Avengers: Infinity War opens May 4, 2018.
