James Cameron is returning to the sci-fi franchise that launched his career!

According to Deadline, the legendary filmmaker who wrote and directed the first two (and easily the best) installments (1984's The Terminator, 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day) in the Terminator franchise is rebooting the film series and is already closing in on Deadpool director, Tim Miller, to helm the new film.

He'll be back! James Cameron, who regains certain rights to his prized creation The Terminator in 2019, is godfathering a new iteration of the film that might finally get it right in drawing a close in the battle between humans and Skynet. Sources said that Cameron, whose copyright reversion happens 35 years after the release of the 1984 classic, is in early talks with Deadpool director and VFX wiz Tim Miller to direct a reboot and conclusion of one of cinema's great science fiction tales.

When Cameron first penned the The Terminator screenplay — which is about an unstoppable 21st century cyborg (Arnold Schwarzenegger) sent back to 1984 to assassinate a woman that will give birth to the heroic leader of the human resistance — the special effects guru had only directed Piranha 2, so he sold the rights to producer Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead) for one dollar and, in exchange, the unexperienced filmmaker was allowed to helm the film. Even though he returned for its sequel, Cameron has always regretted selling the rights for pittance.

Since T2, Cameron hasn't had any involvment with the franchise. Since then, we've had three more movies — with the last being the underperforming Terminator Genisys (2015) — and even a TV series, The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008-2009).

The Titanic and Avatar helmer had planned to buy back the rights years ago, but producers Mario Kassar and Andy Vajna outbid him after Cameron made the mistake of revealing his intentions to them.

Additionally, Deadline isn't sure whether Cameron and Skydance will "reboot the whole thing or pick up from where Cameron left off after the second film."
