Hamilton Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda To Bring The Kingkiller Chronicle To Film And Television

Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of Broadway smash hit Hamilton, has signed on as creative producer for a film and television adaptation of Patrick Rothfuss's trilogy of fantasy novels, The Kingkiller Chronicle. The adaptation is being developed by Lionsgate.

In addition to being the producer, Miranda will serve as "musical mastermind" for The Kingkiller Chronicle. according to The Wrap. That means Miranda will compose the adaptation's music, write original songs, and holds and option to create a stage adaptation in the future.

The feature film will be an adaptation of the first book of The Kingkiller Chronicle, titled The Name of the Wind. Lindsey Beer is writing the film's script. A television series that will "expand on the world outside of the books" is being developed simultaneously, with Miranda and Rothfuss developing new characters and storylines for the show.

"The best way to service Pat Rothfuss' unique and ambitious view was to invent a new way of adapting it with Lionsgate's film and television teams working side-by-side, which meant that only a multi-hyphenate talent like Lin-Manuel Miranda could do the job," said Erik Feig, Co-President, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, in a statement. "Lin is an incomparable talent and a huge fan of the trilogy and, working closely with Pat, his creative oversight of the franchise will bring an incredible level of detail and continuity to all of the projects."

"Pat Rothfuss' Kingkiller books are among the most read and re-read in our home," Miranda said. "It's a world you want to spend lifetimes in, as his many fans will attest. Pat also writes about the act of MAKING music more beautifully than any novelist I've ever read. I can't wait to play a part in bringing this world to life onscreen."

Robert Lawrence will produce both the film and television installments of The Kingkiller Chronicle.

Rothfuss published the first book of The Kingkiller Chronicle, The Name of the Wind, in 2007. The sequel, The Wise Man's Fear, followed in 2011. The final novel in the trilogy hasn't been published yet and has the working title of The Doors of Stone.

The Kingkiller Chronicle is a fictional autobiography chronicling the life of Kvothe, a famous musician and adventurer. The story is split between events at the inn where Kvothe is telling his life story to the Chronicler and the tales Kvothe is himself telling, which are told from Kvothe's perspective. Kvothe also relays several other stories of other characters that he remembers hearing during his travels.

The Kingkiller Chronicle is an acclaimed and popular work of modern fantasy. Game of Thrones fans will likely want to keep and eye on the adaptation.
