American Ninja Warrior has been given the green light by NBC for a sixth season of the popular athletic competition series. The announcement came on the same day as tonight's Season 5 finale.

The show is averaging a 2.1 rating with 7.2 million overall viewers as it is coming off the most-watched season ever, according to Nielsen. The hosts of the show are Matt Iseman, former NFL player Akbar Gbajabiamila alongside co-host Kristine Leahy.

On American Ninja Warrior, participants try to conquer a series of challenging obstacles that require both speed, strength, and endurance. For all the contestants that complete the city finals rounds of their designated region are given the opportunity to compete on a national stage at the final rounds in Las Vegas. At the finals, the challengers face a four-stage course modeled after the Mt. Midoriyama course in Japan, according to Deadline. A $1 million grand prize is awarded to the winner.

The president of Alternative and Reality Group from NBC Entertainment, Paul Telegdy stated: "The increased popularity of American Ninja Warrior on air, as well as its growing social and cultural impact, is a testament to the athletes who push themselves beyond their limits. We couldn't be more proud to see this show reach new heights and watch the affect it has on those who compete and strive to be their best."

The popular series is produced by A. Smith for NBC/Esquire Network, and is executive-produced by A. Smith & Co. Productions' founders Arthur Smith and Kent Weed (Hell's Kitchen) alongside Anthony Storm andn Brian Richardson, according to Deadline.

Adam Stotsky, President of E! and Esquire network stated, "We are in constant awe of the extraordinary athletes on American Ninja Warrior who make the show as exhilarating to watch as it is to produce." He continued, "It is incredibly exciting how the series has evolved from an unconventional Japanese game show with a cult following to the global hit phenomenon that it is today in partnership with NBC – and we are looking forward to many more seasons to come."

The season finale of American Ninja Warrior airs on September 12 at 8 PM ET on NBC. Also, there is an encore presentation scheduled for Esquire Network on Tuesday at 8 PM ET.
