Keira Knightley Cast As Sugar Plum Fairy In The Nutcracker Live-Action Movie

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms has its Sugar Plum Fairy in actress Keira Knightley.

The film is the latest in Disney's line of live action treatments, and alongside Knightley will be Mackenzie Foy as Clara and Misty Copeland and Morgan Freeman in as of yet unnamed parts.

Lasse Hallstrom is set to direct the new interpretation of the 1816 classic story, based on a script from Ashleigh Powell. Mark Gordon is set to produce, with Lindy Goldstein Executive Producing. Overseeing for Disney on the project are Sam Dickerman and Allison Erlikhman, while Sara Smith is serving as the overseer for the Mark Gordon Company (via Variety).

For those unfamiliar with the original story, it centers around a young girl who stumbles upon a Nutcracker. The toy then comes to life to battle the evil mouse king.

Next up for Knightly is the David Frankel Directed Collateral Beauty, which also stars Will Smith, Kate Winslet, Edward Norton, and Helen Mirren. The movie sets down into theaters on December 16th.

Disney had been on quite a roll with their animated to live action translations, which included Maleficent, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and The Jungle Book, which were all monumentally successful. Alice in Wonderland Through the Looking Glass did not fare well at all in its box office run, and their latest film, Pete's Dragon, has received positive reviews but has failed to generate a great deal of income at the box office. The upcoming Beauty and the Beast, however, should fare quite well.
