Shane Black's got nards.

Just a few years after weathering the intense fan scrutiny of making Iron Man 3, the filmmaker -- who is also working on a follow-up to Predator and looking to adapt Doc Savage to the big screen -- says he wants to make a sequel to Fred Dekker's 1987 cult classic The Monster Squad.

Black co-wrote the original with Dekker, and while the notion of a sequel has occasionally floated around Hollywood, iti's never really gained traction.

"The cult surprised [me]" Black told IGN. "I didn't even realise it had been successful. I loved it, I had fun working on it and it was one of the first things I'd ever written. And it wasn't just that it wasn't a hit - it was a huge failure. No one saw it. I don't know how on earth it caught on years later."

"It would be interesting to have two movies - one The Monster Squad, and one The Monster Squad and they're 30 years apart and so are the kids; the characters have aged," Black added. "As long as people understood that's what we're doing, I think that could be fun. That's a good idea!"

The original The Monster Squad dealt with a group of kids who were the last line of defense against an incursion of monsters -- they battled essentially a super-team of mummies, vampires, and the rest, all while trying to protect Frankenstein's monster, who wasn't really such a bad guy. It was a definitely '80s movie, and while it would be difficult to recapture that alchemy, with Stranger Things on everyone's mind right now, this moment in pop culture history might be the best time to try...!
