It's been a rather bumpy road for Paul Feig's Ghostbusters reboot. Negative reaction to both the trailers and, if we're honest, to the original premise of replacing the male cast with four women, has so far engulfed most of the discussion around the film.

Feig recently opened up on this topic with the New York Daily News, and he didn't hold back.

"Geek culture is home to some of the biggest a------s I've ever met in my life. Especially after being attacked by them for months because of this 'Ghostbusters' project."

Speaking candidly about his casting choices, Feig said: "I don't care what shape or size or color or anything they are. I live or die on what things are funny and whether or not people will be entertained by them." He continued, saying "(I'm merely trying to) tell a story you haven't seen before. Or tell a story you've seen before, but in a way you haven't seen it."

In regards to Melissa McCarthy, Feig glowed about the actress, saying: "(Melissa McCarthy) is just this hilarious woman who is so funny. I don't care WHAT she looks like. As long as she's funny and is a professional. She's hilarious." Feig says the actress has a "very undefinable quality", which "You know when you see it. It's just charisma and relatability."

Ultimately opinions will swing if the film is funny, and no amount of down-votes on Youtube can change that. Ghostbusters hits theaters on July 15th.
