Thanos Civil War

When Captain America: Civil War explodes into theaters in May, there will be a whole lot of Marvel characters on the screen, but none of them will be Thanos.

The Mad Titan, who will be played Josh Brolin in the Infinity War movies come 2018 and 2019, won't so much be as mentioned in Civil War. There's a perfectly good reason for it, too, so drop the cosmic-angst and listen to what the writers have to say.

"Because we've got so much cosmic-ness waiting, we are more than happy to keep it waiting," says Civil War writer, Christopher Markus. "Because, you know...Civil War is such a grounded argument, that you don't want to go, [whispers] 'Actually, that's not very important because there's a space man coming.' We all know there's a space man coming, but it's going to blow this argument out of the water if you bring it up. So all that has to stay far enough away."

That couldn't be more true. Since Marvel Studios announced their upcoming slate of movies through 2019, we as an audience know that the Infinity War is upon our Marvel Cinematic Universe. The characters, however, don't share that knowledge with us. Surely, if they knew Thanos was looming and ready to destroy the world, they would put their petty little Civil War aside, at least for the time being.

Does this necessarily mean the big purple baddie won't be featured in a post-credits scene? I wouldn't rule it out with 100% certainty but at the same time, I wouldn't hold my breathe.

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters May 6.
