Sonic the Hedgehog is coming to the big screen, courtesy of Sega and Sony Pictures. Hajime Satomi, the president and CEO of Sega's parent company Sega Sammy Holdings, confirmed the project is in the works in an interview with The World Folio, saying the film will be a mix of live action and computer animation.

"Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live action and animation hybrid Sonic the Hedgehog movie scheduled for release in 2018," Satomi said.

Sega announced an animated Sonic the Hedgehog movie was in production at Marza Animation Planet back in 2014. It is unclear if that project has become a live action/animation hybrid, or if it is an entirely separate undertaking.

Sonic has made jaunts into other media in the past, including a Japanese animated movie and anime series. In North America, ABC ran a Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon on Saturday mornings in the early 1990s. More recently, Cartoon Network launched a new series called Sonic Boom, a reboot that carried into multiple videogame tie-ins. Sonic is also featured in a long-running Archie Comics series, which has begun crossing over with Mega Man and other Sega and Capcom universes.

Sonic the Hedgehog will celebrate its 25th anniversary this June.
