A Dragon Ball fan is petitioning to rename a planet after Namek, the home planet of Piccolo and other characters from Akira Toriyama's manga and anime series.

The planet is currently named Kepler-22b, as it orbits Kepler-22. It was named after the Kepler Space Telescope that discovered it, which was itself named after Renaissance era astronomer Johannes Kepler.

Feeling that this naming pattern was kind of played out, and noticing that Kepler-22b's blue-green appearance is similar to that of Namek's, Lou Earley launched a Change.org petition to see the name changed.

As a fan of Dragon Ball, Z/GT/Super, Planet Namek has been an icon throughout the stories of the famous anime series/manga series created by Akira Toriyama (Animated by Toei Animation). I have made this petition to get Kepler 22b an official name, which will be named after a very lavish planet. They look alike as well. I petition to change the name of Kepler 22b to "Namek".

If the petition reaches 75,000 signatures, it will be sent to the International Astronomical Union for consideration. The petition is currently less than 10,000 signatures away from achieving that goal.
