Many fans have fond childhood memories of The Muppets, but the people behind the franchise's new primetime reboot are trying to strip away the "kid-like quality" of the franchise.

Series co-creator Bill Prady tells Adweek that it's all an attempt to bring the The Muppets back to their roots as entertainment intended for adults. Prady says after creator Jim Henson's death "it became more of a kids property than an adult property, which is what Jim Henson meant for it to be at the beginning. It was meant for adults, and we're going back to that. We're trying to strip them of their kid-like quality."

"There's an emotional component to the show that will still resonate with the parents and the kids," says co-creator Bob Kushnell. "The jokes that will be racier and more adult are things that will work on two completely different levels."

Fans will be able to judge for themselves when The Muppets premieres on ABC on Sept. 22.
