Nicolas Winding Refn, best known for his 2011 film Drive, is one of the most in-demand filmmakers in Hollywood.

Rumored for a number of recent high-profile projects, Refn has never actually jumped into the fray of big-franchise filmmaking yet -- but he might consider it for the DC Extended Universe.

The Danish filmmaker told Business Insider that he would have loved to have made Wonder Woman, but that Batgirl is another cool opportunity.

"God, I would love to make one, it would probably be great fun," Refn said. "I just don't know when it's going to happen. I very much enjoy my freedom creatively, but I also would love to make one of those big Hollywood films that costs a lot of money and has a lot of people running around with cell phones and all that insanity."

"What ones are left?" Refn added. "You know the one I want to do? I want to make Batgirl. Let's get Warner working on it."

In the comics, there have been three different characters who went by "Batgirl" and had their own series. The first and most common is Barbara Gordon, popularized by the 1966 Batman TV show. There have been persistent rumors that Gordon's character in the DC Extended Universe would be paralyzed and serving in her role as Oracle. In the comics, this happened after she was shot in Batman: The Killing Joke and suffered spinal damage.

After Gordon, both Cassandra Cain and eventually Stephanie Brown served as Batgirl for short periods of time. Currently, though, Gordon is back in the costume, having recovered from her paralysis with the help of comic book science. Her new series is much more upbeat than the DC movies have been so far, but also features a lot of leather, motorcycles, and color plays a big role -- all things that mark Refn's Drive.

Batgirl is one of the female DC characters rumored to make an appearance in the Harley Quinn-centric Suicide Squad spinoff that's in early development. If that's the case, it may be the first time we get a sense for Barbara Gordon's actual history in the DC movies, since contrary to persistent rumors, Jena Malone did not play Gordon in the extended "Ultimate Cut" of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
