Traces of Controversial Herbicide Found in Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Products

Vermont-based company, Ben & Jerry's is facing boycott threats after a study found trace amounts of a chemical used to kill weeds in 10 different flavors of their ice cream.

According to PR Newswire, the Organic Consumers Association says it found glyphosate, the main ingredient used in herbicides like, Roundup, in about 10 flavored samples it tested.

Those samples included, Peanut Butter Cup, Peanut Butter Cookie, two flavors of Vanilla, Phish Food, The Tonight Dough, Half Baked, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Americone Dream and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. However, its beloved flavor, Cherry Garcia tested negative for the herbicide.

Though the chemicals found in the ice cream are still quite below the dangerous levels set by the Environmental Protection Agency, The New York Times says an adult would have to consume an estimated 290,000 servings a day to hit the EPA's limit.

However, consumer groups are still not happy, stating there is no "safe" level when it comes glyphosate. Many are now calling for a boycott of Ben & Jerry's, unless the company commits to organic ingredients.

Ben & Jerry's told The Times on Wednesday that it is working to move away from genetically modified organisms.
