In case there was any doubt that the upcoming Leatherface wouldn't serve as an origin story to Tobe Hooper's iconic horror film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, a new poster will certainly remind you of that fact, as you can see below.
The film's synopsis is as follows:
"Jessica Madsen plays one of four inmates (Sam Coleman, Sam Strike, James Bloor) who
Many horror fans might be slightly confused at the concept of a prequel to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, considering The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning was released in 2006. However, that film served as a predecessor to the 2003 remake of the original film, with the remake taking some liberties with the original concept and changing a few plot elements.
The above poster might not initially connect with fans of the franchise, as the iconography is different from what fans have come to expect from the Leatherface character. Throughout the many Texas Chainsaw films, the character is portrayed as a cannibal that will skin people and use their faces to craft new masks, hiding his disfigured appearance. The use of a cow's head clearly marks the early incarnations of his eventual crafting skills.
The last film in the franchise, Texas Chainsaw 3D, served as both a sequel and soft reboot of the franchise, combining elements from both the remake universe and original film's universe. The Alexandra Daddario-starring installment was a relative success, causing many fans to be confused over the delay in releasing a new film in the franchise.
One factor in the film's delay could be that it was directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, two French directors who have built a reputation for conveying disturbing themes in their films like Inside and Among the Living. Their penchant for the bizarre seems like it made them the perfect choices for directors, but their French filmmaking sensibilities might not have resonated well for the studio when used in a film that's inherently American.
Despite how long it's taken to get the film released, fans can enjoy Leatherface when it hits DirecTV on September 21 and on VOD and in limited theatrical release on October 20.
