Must-See Horror Titles Coming To Netflix In June

The Sixth Sense - Arriving 6/1

The film responsible for M. Night Shyamalan's legacy, in addition to his predeliction towards twist endings, The Sixth Sense will hit Netflix as soon as the month begins.

Almost more well-known for its legacy than the film itself, The Sixth Sense became a pop culture phenomenon, parodied in every form of media imaginable, in addition to giving us the often-quoted "I see dead people" line of dialogue.

Sixth Sense remains as effective today as it was in 1999, reminding audiences why it is one of only a handful of horror movies to ever earn a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards.

In the film, a troubled kid (played by the phenomenal Haley Joel Osment) finds solace in his therapist (Bruce Willis), as he's the only one who truly seems to believe the youngster in his claims that he can see spirits.

Even if you already know the twist ending, Shyamalan's direction reminds you why he deserved his many opportunities to craft deliberately-paced horror movies full of atmosphere, making us even more excited for his upcoming Split/Unbreakable sequel.

The Blair Witch Project - Leaving 6/1

Another horror film from the summer of '99 that changed the genre as we know it, The Blair Witch Project, will be leaving the streaming service when June kicks off.

Much like The Sixth Sense, Blair Witch Project permeated ever corner of pop culture, cementing its legacy as one of the more ambitious horror films ever made, inspiring countless imitators who believe all you need to make a horror film is a camera and a couple friends who are willing to spend time in the woods.

The marketing campaign for Blair Witch portrayed the film as actual footage that was discovered, whose contents contained an unfinished documentary about a group of filmmakers who ventured deep into the Maryland woods to see if there was any truth to a local legend about a witch who compelled a man to murder seven children.

If the film and its subtle scares wasn't compelling enough, the behind-the-scenes stories about how the actors didn't know what was real and what was fake help make the entire concept all the more interesting, making it well-worth the revisit before it leaves Netflix in June.

Zodiac - Arriving 6/1

Far from a traditional horror film, Zodiac is often considered both one of director David Fincher's most underrated films and, according to some, his masterpiece. Some film fans might prefer his earlier film about a serial killer, Se7en, but Zodiac showed that, in some cases, truth can be more terrifying than fiction.

Inspired by the 1986 book of the same name, Zodiac examines a string of murders in the San Francisco area in the late '60s and early '70s. Due to complications between different police precincts and jurisdictions, the film shows the difficulties authorities faced when attempting to identify the killer, even though the supposed murderer regularly made contact with authorities through phone calls and coded letters.

Featuring phenomenal performances from Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., and Mark Ruffalo, Zodiac and all of its unanswered questions showcases Fincher's eye for gorgeous cinematography and terrify you with a reminder at how easily a known killer can slip through the criminal system.

House of Wax - Leaving 6/1

The '00s was full of horror film remakes that came into existence for no other reason than studios purchasing the rights to a well-known classic, only to squander all opportunities to do something unique. House of Wax, on the other hand, took the somewhat goofy Vincent Price classic and give a fun, gore-filled thriller.

A group of coeds (featuring Elisha Cuthbert, Chad Michael Murray, and, yes, Paris Hilton) run into car trouble on their way to a football game and seek help in a small town. While exploring the isolated community, they discover it used to be quite the popular roadside attraction, as the entire village is full of fake residences and wax figurines. Rather than finding help, the coeds discover the terrifying reality of who has helped maintain the town after all these years and also learn that, if they don't escape, the will become the next permanent residents.

This 2005 remake might be full of jump scares and have a razor-thin premise, but the campy concept is given a special effects-heavy film that captures the fun of the original film, but gives gorehounds a lot more to chew on.

Headshot - Arriving 6/3

PFrom Indonesian filmmaking team Timo Tjahjanto and Kimo Stamboel, Headshot is like Jason Bourne meets The Raid, giving genre fans a taut thriller full of bloody vengeance.

When a young man, played by The Raid's Iko Uwais, washes up on a beach, he is treated for a head wound by local doctors. With no memory of how he got there or who he is, the hospital gives him the nickname "Ishmael" after Moby Dick. Ishmael has bullet fragments in his head, and while traveling to a more sophisticated facility to have them removed, a gang attacks the transport and kidnaps a nurse, setting Ishmael on a mission to retrieve her.

Headshot isn't your traditional horror film, but the directors, who refer to themselves as "The Mo Brothers," are no strangers to the horror realm. They previously gave fans the sleazy serial killer story Killers, while Tjahjanto co-directed the "Safe Haven" segment of V/H/S/2, easily the film's strongest story.
