Transformers: The Last Knight has a mysterious story involving the history of both the Transformer and human races, with the former story arc bringing the Autobots and Decepticons into contact with the being(s) who supposedly created them.
From what we've seen in the trailers for The Last Knight, the story will see Optimus Prime going through some sort of process where his creators turn him into a purple-eyed maniac, who violently assaults his loyal soldier, Bumblebee, and his human ally from Age of Extinction, Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg).
Well, that same action sequence hinted that Bumblebee was about to meet a violent end at Optimus' hands - but today we have a new promotional design from The Last Knight, which suggests a much more fantastical development.
What you see above is a Transformers 5 promotional standee that was supposedly discovered at Toys'R'Us (via Screen Rant). It clearly shows that Optimus Prime will get a new body in The Last Knight, and from the color scheme and design, it seems pretty clear that parts of Bumblebee's body has been added to Optimus' frame.
Now, there are several speculative possibilities from what this image hints at:
- Optimus Prime actually carries out his destruction of Bumblebee, and later honors his fallen soldier (or relies on him one last time) by adding repairing his body with Bumblebee's leftovers.
- Optimus an Bumblebee wilfully merge into one form, in order to win some kind of battle.
- It's actually Optimus who sacrifices himself, after destroying Bumblebee, and donates his own body to rebuild Bumblebee. In short: It's actually Bumblebee in Optimus Prime's body.
We'll know for sure once Transformers: The Last Knight hits theaters.

Transformers: The Last Knight shatters the core myths of the Transformers franchise, and redefines what it means to be a hero. Humans and Transformers are at war, Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Saving our world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Wahlberg); Bumblebee; an English Lord (Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Haddock).
The cast of Transformers: The Last Knight features Mark Wahlberg (Planet of the Apes) as Cade Yeager, Isabela Moner (100 Things To Do Before High School) as Izabella, Josh Duhamel (Life as We Know It) as Lieutenant Colonel William Lennox, John Turturro (The Big Lebowski) as Seymour Simmons, and Tyrese Gibson (Furious 7) as Robert Epps, as well as Jerrod Carmichael (Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising), Anthony Hopkins (Thor: The Dark World). The voice cast includes Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime and John Goodman (10 Cloverfield Lane) as Hound.
There comes a moment in everyone’s life when we are called upon to make a difference. In Transformers: The Last Knight, the hunted will become heroes. Heroes will become villains. Only one world will survive: theirs, or ours.
Michael Bay will return to direct. Transformers: The Last Knight opens in theaters on June 23, 2017.
