It's common knowledge that Kim Kardashian turned to the low-carb Atkins diet in the aftermath of her pregnancies to shed that baby weight. But now, Kim is rejecting the super-strict tenets of Atkins in favor of incorporating carbs back into her diet — but only what she calls "healthy carbs".
What's the difference? According to Kim, her restrictive diet on Atkins was actually working against her. "I think I was eating less, thinking I'm not going to eat this — I mean, the obvious things like sugar and stuff like that," she explained on The View.
"But I was eating absolutely no carbs — or trying to — and that's really hard for me... I just wasn't eating properly."
She's since completely shifted her mindset about carbs, and is now working with a "bodybuilder girl" she discovered via social media: "She's really helped me with my meal plan to definitely add carbs in, healthy carbs, vegetables..." she said. According to the reality star, adding carbs back into her diet has triggered a major transformation. "In just a few weeks I see my body tightening up. I've shrunk and come into place," she explained.
For those of us who love carbs, Kim's story may sound too good to be true. But it is understandable that allowing oneself to indulge a bit in a favorite food group can actually help you keep on track. According to Isabel Foxen Duke, a certified health coach and author of How To Not Eat Cake, being hyper-limiting about what you eat can backfire.
“It’s just a matter of time before you can’t fight any longer...before you’re on autopilot, lunging for that jar of peanut butter, because you just need some relief. The pressure is too much; it’s too heavy to bear,” she explains. That’s why it’s so difficult to stop the cycle of dieting and binging if you adhere to strict dietary restrictions.
So what sort of so-called "healthy carbs" does Kim allow herself? According to sources, Ozery Bakery's snacking rounds have become a new favorite for the star (other celebs, including Tiffani Thiessen, are already big fans) because they're a simple snack that can replace other, less healthy bread-based treats.
Both Thiessen and Kardashian are known for their diet-conscious lifestyles, with Thiessen even starring in her own cooking show Dinner at Tiffani's. Thiessen is often found putting her unique twist on diet classics (her detox guac is a big hit), but this is the first time we've seen Kardashian put her own spin on a tried-and-true diet style.
Though we're hesitant to agree with the reality star that her body wasn't looking her best as she insisted on The View, we are happy to find that she's learning to relax her restrictions surrounding food a bit — and with great results. Her recent intense workouts already seem to be making strides at helping her feel more confident after her brush with the paparazzi.
