Country singer Michael Johnson has died at age 72, according to a message posted on his website.

The star, known for hits like "Bluer Than Blue," passed Tuesday night after "a long illness."

Johnson saw success in the '70s and '80s with country and pop hits including "Bluer Than Blue," "Give Me Wings" and "The Moon Is Still Over Her Shoulder."

The multi-genre artist began playing guitar as a teen, and went on to leave college early after winning a talent contest that landed him his first record deal, Rolling Stone shares. He then studied classical guitar in Barcelona, Spain, later joining the group New Society and the trio Denver, Boise and Johnson.

After an off-Broadway stint, he recorded three albums before striking gold with "Bluer Than Blue."

He continued to release albums and eventually turned country, touring with artists like Wynonna, Clint Black and Alison Krauss and Union Station. His last album, 2012's Moonlit Déjà Vu, was recorded with his daughter, Truly Carmichael.

Johnson is survived by his daughter and two sons, Leo and Stan.
