While Priscilla Presley and Elvis split up nearly 40 years ago, she still remembers the best gift the legendary crooner passed along to her.
In an exclusive interview with Closer Weekly, the 72-year-old shares that Elvis once gave her a brand new 1964 Chevrolet Corvair when she was a teenager, at just 17 years old.
“Elvis gifted it to me as a [high school] graduation present in 1963. I loved it! Can you imagine? It was my very first car and the fact that he gave it to me made it very special,” she said.
Priscilla adds that it was “such a beautiful car.”
“Cars were larger in those days so this was the perfect car for me,” she said. “It was sporty in look and feel. There weren’t many around.”
The mother of Lisa Marie and grandmother of actress, Riley Keough, tells Closer Weekly that she can remember the time the two went for a drive together, but it didn’t go without some qualms on Elvis’ behalf.
“I remember taking Elvis for a drive in [the car,] but only around the circular driveway at Graceland,” Priscilla recalled, referencing the singer’s Memphis home. “He didn’t want to be seen with a girl driving him around!”
Priscilla started dating the mega superstar when she was just 14, with the two meeting in Germany while Elvis was stationed there in the U.S. Army in 1959. While they didn’t elope until 1967, they went on to become one of the most famous celebrity rock couples in history. Unfortunately, they called it quits after six years of marriage in 1973.
The “King of Rock and Roll” tragically died at age 42 in August 1977.
