The odds that Shailene Woodley will return for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 after having been cut out of this spring's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were never particularly good, but following a new interview in which she discusses her feeling toward big, franchise films, it seems they're more or less non-existent. Talking about rumors that she had rejected the opportunity to audition to play Anastasia Steele in the upcoming film adaptation of the best-selling erotic romance novel Fifty Shades of Grey, Woodley said that was true, and then explained that working on more than one tentpole movie at a time was probably too much for her. "It actually is true," the actress, who seems more at home in indie films like The Spectacular Now and The Descendants, told The Daily Beast. "I didn't want to audition for it. It's because I had already done Divergent and I knew there was no way I wanted to do multiple franchises at the same time, because that's crazy, so I didn't see the point in it." While Fifty Shades of Grey is based on a trilogy of novels, the movie itself will reportedly be a single film that adapts an abbreviated version of the three. The Amazing Spider-Man, meanwhile, is a genuine franchise, with Sony recently saying that they hoped to begin releasing Spider-Man Universe films annually. While nobody has officially counted her out of the Spider-Man films yet, and it's likely she has a multi-picture deal and would have to work out a deal with Sony to stay gone, that quote coupled with the non-committal attitude of the filmmakers certainly seems to suggest that by the time The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is being cast, we might be looking at a different Mary Jane Watson. Speaking to MTV at the Sundance Film Festival in January, Woodley said of Spidey, "I don't know anything, but seeing as how they picked up the next two Divergent films, I don't know how I'd keep my sanity with two big action films in one year." She added, "But anything can happen, so...," but it wasn't particularly convincing.
