Deadline is reporting that Joe Cornish, co-writer of Ant-Man and director of Attack of the Block, is a frontrunner to helm the upcoming third installment of the J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek reboot. The film is expected to go in front of cameras next summer with the hopes of making it to theaters in time for the franchise's fiftieth anniversary in 2016. The hunt for a director has been on since J.J. Abrams announced that he would be directing Star Wars Episode VII, and everyone in the entertainment industry collectively decided it was unlikely he would return for another Trek right away. Abrams will remain on board as a producer but if there was any hope of making the fiftieth anniversary goal, he wasn't going to be able to direct, since Star Wars is hitting in 2015 and will start shooting in the spring. Ironically, Cornish's Ant-Man collaborator Edgar Wright directed a single shot in this year's Star Trek Into Darkness.
