Superman III

Thirty years ago today, Richard Lester's Superman III hit theaters in the U.S. Whether you remember it as "the funny one," the beginning of the end of the Christopher Reeve series or just that movie they talked about a bunch in Office Space, Superman III was a polarizing superhero film back before the internet pitted everyone against each other whenever a new movie came out. Loaded with comedy relief in the person of legendary stand-up comic Richard Pryor, Superman III was also the film that saw Christopher Reeve play a "dark Superman" who drank and used his powers in a more flamboyant, bullying fashion. With a humble 26% freshness rating at Rotten Tomatoes, the film wasn't beloved by the critics in spite of having Reeve and producer Alexander Suskind behind it once again. In fact, it rates more than sixty points lower than Superman II (89% to 26%) and is one of only two films in the franchise to get less critical love than Man of Steel (Superman IV: The Quest for Peace rates a 9%).
