Captain America The Winter Soldier

During an interview promoting his forthcoming film Side Effects, Magic Mike and Ocean's Eleven director Steven Soderbergh discussed his role in helping Joe and Anthony Russo line up their job on Captain America: The Winter Soldier...and why he won't be doing any comic book movies anytime soon. And, no, it's not because he doesn't like them or even that he's getting ready to retire (though he is) and doesn't want to involve himself in a massive franchise. It's just that, as a non-comic book reader, he doesn't see himself as right for the role. "I just wasn't a comic book guy," Soderbergh told Collider. "When the Russos were going after the Captain America sequel, they called me and said, 'Will you call Marvel and talk to them about us?' because I have a relationship with them. I said, 'Tell me why you want to do this.' And they go, 'Because we have a $60,000 comic book collection, because we're obsessed with this shit.' And I went, 'Okay, I'm just checking.' Because I'm not, that's why I can't do one, but I didn't know that and I just wanted to make sure that they were going after it for the right reasons as it turned out they were and they ended up getting the job and they'll do a great job because they love it, and I'm just not the guy." Interestingly, we had recently listed Soderbergh on our list of potential directors to replace J.J. Abrams on Star Trek 3, provided the filmmaker elects not to direct, which is looking more and more likely.
