Hugh Laurie will no longer appear in the upcoming Jose Padilha remake of RoboCop, according to Deadline Hollywood. No reason was yet given for his departure, but accounts earlier this month had reactions to the script being poor, and it's possible that a busy schedule simply didn't allow for the time required to rewrite before shooting begins. MGM, who are distributing the film, are reportedly looking into a number of candidates to replace Laurie, including Sin City actor Clive Owen. The TV icon was set to play the chairman of OmniCorp, the corporation responsible for the creation of RoboCop, in a movie that will also star Joel Kinnaman from AMC's The Killing alongside Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson. The film, which also stars Abbie Cornish as Murphy's wife, is scheduled to start shooting this summer for a release on August 9, 2013.
