Former boxing champ Floyd Mayweather is agreeing to a rule change that will allow UFC superstar Conor McGregor to wear 8-ounce gloves.

The fighters are set to compete at the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds. In several interviews, McGregor, 29, claimed that Mayweather was intentionally targeting the junior middleweight limit because the 10-ounce gloves are standard in fights above welterweight class.

"Don't believe what you hear in the media. Don't believe what you hear on blog sites. If it's not coming directly from me, then it's not true. I'm telling McGregor, 'Let's fight in 8 oz gloves.' McGregor can fight in any brand he prefers or chooses.

"I'll be wearing 8 oz Grant gloves. Whatever advantage McGregor needs to feel more comfortable in the ring, I'm willing to accommodate. Let's give the boxing and MMA fans what they want to see," Mayweather said in a statement.

The smaller gloves can be used in the event that both fighters agreed to the change but the Nevada State Athletic Commission would have to grant special permission for the stipulation.

Despite Mayweather's willingness to fight in smaller gloves, it most likely will not happen.

On Tuesday, NSAC executive director Bob Bennett said that the commission would not bend to Mayweather's request, even if both fighters agree.

"These regulations are in place for the health and safety of the athletes, which is of the utmost importance to the commission," Bennett said while speaking with ESPN. "Our regulations already outline the appropriate glove size according to contracted weight of a fight."

The upcoming fight takes place on August 26th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

McGregor, the Irish fighter who is the biggest name in mixed martial arts, is competing in his first ever boxing match.
