Showrunner Chuck Lorre Dishes on Why He's a 'Nervous Wreck' About 'Young Sheldon'

Young Sheldon, the spinoff to CBS' smash hit The Big Bang Theory, premieres Sept. 25, and showrunner Chuck Lorre admitted that he's a "nervous wreck" when it comes to his latest creation.

Lorre spoke to reporters Tuesday at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour to share some more details about the upcoming show, which follows the 9-year-old version of The Big Bang Theory's Sheldon Cooper as the young genius grows up in Texas.

The show will be shot in single-camera format, which is new for Lorre and admittedly made him a "nervous wreck."

"It's more intimate; the pacing is very different," Lorre said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "We knew going in we'd be working with a cast of young children and that seemed more appropriate for them to do their best work. We wanted to give them an opportunity to work in a closed setting where they have the time to develop these characters."

Lorre also revealed a bit of inspiration behind the show, sharing that he turned to iconic sitcom The Wonder Years for tips.

"We absolutely discussed Wonder Years when we were writing," Lorre said via SlashFilm. "I never worked with narration before. Narration changes the way you write. We looked for inspiration in shows that used it brilliantly. Nobody did it better than Wonder Years."

Jim Parsons, who plays adult Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory, is set to narrate the show. Parsons also serves as executive producer along with Lorre, and former Big Bang Theory showrunner Steve Molaro will helm the series. Steve Holland will now serve as showrunner for The Big Bang Theory.
