Kevin Owens Wants to Fight His Friends at WrestleMania

The Matrix Trilogy taught the world many things, but one of its most universally applied quotes is, "You don't truly know someone until you've fought them." In real life, familiarity may bring contempt, but in WWE, it mostly just brings great matches.

Kevin Owens seems to be an ardent follower of this principal. Having already crafted a terrifically entertaining tale with his pal, Chris Jericho, Owens may be inclined to have more friend-based programs. In an interview with At The Shore, the former Universal Champion was asked who his dream opponent would be in a WrestleMania main event:

"I feel like Sami Zayn. It would be such a great chapter to add to our story. We've been at each other's throats and by each other's sides simultaneously the last 15 years. It would be great to do something with him."

KO gave us a bonus answer, effectively calling out The Demon:

"And also Finn Balor, who is my best friend. We got to the WWE the exact same time and didn't know each other before hand. We had a bit of contact here and there before because we knew we both would spend time there. We bonded over that. Once we got to Orlando we've become very close quickly and getting to main event with him would be incredible. It would be another incredible chapter to our story. We both kind of dove in to uncharted territories, him from Japan and me from other places. We both did well for ourselves. To get to achieve that was very special."

Either of these prospective matches would be quite the crowning moment for Independent wrestling. While plenty of WWE superstars have their roots in Independent promotions, guys like Owens, Zayn, and Balor have all spent the majority of the careers (and primes) away from WWE. For them to get the shiniest spot wrestling could offer would be near transcendental.

In wrestling, friends fighting friends is nearly guaranteed to be a hit. Triple H and Shawn Michaels would put on physical, emotionally compelling contests. The same goes for Mick Foley and Terry Funk who seemed to gain great pleasure in punishing one another. We couldn't expect anything other than greatness in a WrestleMania match between Owens and either Zayn or Balor.

Could this ever happen? Don't count on it. It's not that these performers aren't capable of closing a WrestleMania, it's just that WWE will always have the hallowed slot reserved for company wrestlers like Roman Reigns, John Cena etc. Perhaps the most notable "Indy Guy" of all time, CM Punk, could not reach the pantheon of the final match at WrestleMania. That's not to say Owens and Co. can't do it, they just probably won't. As they say, in the business, never say never.
