The upcoming Netflix original Death Note live-action adaptation has recently sparked some controversy online. Many fans of the anime are upset at the relocation of the setting (from Japan to Seattle), and others are angry about the "white washing" of many of the original characters. But creators of the original anime responded positively to the trailer, and many are defending the upcoming film adaptation. Regardless of the negative press, the trailer for the adaptation of the hit anime showed a very different but unique take on the Death Note franchise. The trailer makes the new film looks to take a dark crime-action approach to the anime drama.

Set photos from the filming of a scene from the movie have resurfaced online, and the images show off a scene that is not featured in the trailer. The images show L in his new mysterious outfit, in all black with his hood up and face covered. In the pictures it appears that L is holding a press conference with the Seattle Police.

These images may mean a couple of things about L's character in the film, as well as the upcoming story. In the original anime a major part of the story is the struggle between L and Light, and Light not knowing what his face looked like. We see L briefly with his face covered and hood up in the trailer, and it seems like this will be a trend in the film, and he will stay covered through the movie. This means they will be cutting out the whole story arc of L holding a police conference with a body double in order to learn more information about Light and the Death Note. It will be interesting to see how the film adapts the story for American audience, and what parts of the story arc will be included or cut.

Death Note will be available to stream on Netflix beginning August 25, 2017.

Directed by Adam Wingard (Blair Witch), Death Note stars Nat Wolff (Paper Towns, The Fault in Our Stars) as Light Turner; Margaret Qualley (The Nice Guys, The Leftovers) as Mia Sutton; Keith Stanfield (Straight Outta Compton, Dope, Short Term 12) as "L"; Paul Nakauchi (Alpha and Omega) as Watari; and Shea Whigham (Agent Carter, Boardwalk Empire) as James Turner. The film will be produced by Roy Lee (The Ring, The Departed), Dan Lin (The Lego Movie, Sherlock Holmes), Jason Hoffs (Edge of Tomorrow), and Masi Oka (Heroes Reborn, Hawaii-Five-0).

Based on the famous Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows a high school student who comes across a supernatural notebook, realizing it holds within it a great power; if the owner inscribes someone's name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die. Intoxicated with his new godlike abilities, the young man begins to kill those he deems unworthy of life.
