We here at Comicbook.com have a growing interest in how you, the readers are spending your time and money when it comes to the big new movies releasing each week.
With our new Anticipation Rankings, we can get a sense of how a movie will do with fans before its release date arrives; however, the real measure is what happens when the film is in theaters! With our Big Movie Battle, we will measure how fans are reacting to each new release - and how those movies compare to one another!
This week we Disney about to own the box office again with debut of its live-action Beauty and the Beast. However, the battle for second place at the box office is going to be interesting, as Hugh Jackman's final Wolverine movie, Logan goes into its third week hoping to beat current box office champ, Kong: Skull Island, in the longevity race for second place.
As you can see below:
Beauty and the Beast was a Disney animated classic, and the live-action version of the film arrives with worldwide fan anticipation behind it.
The film currently holds a 3.31/5 anticipation rating in our anticipation rankings database; it's a sign that, while there is certainly a built-in audience for a Disney live-action film, maybe there isn't as much excitement for Beauty and the Beast as some may think (at least not with our reader base).
While there is little doubt that Beauty and the Beast is going to have a big weekend at the top of the box office, it will be interesting to see how it endures over multiple weeks - and whether or not Disney fans react well to the live-action version of the classic film.
Kong: Skull Island has quickly gained attention as a good ol' fashioned popcorn blockbuster to enjoy - and critical reviews (including our own official Kong: Skull Island review) have generally been favorable, as has the audience experience (as you can see above). For those reasons, the film managed to conquer the box office in its opening weekend.
However, it's Skull Island's ties to the rebooted Godzilla franchise that has created the most word of mouth about the movie. The King Kong reboot is the beginning chapter of Giant Monster saga that we saw in Godzilla, and will see again in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, before Godzilla and Kong go head-to-head in a big 2020 event film.
Now that you know the King Kong and Godzilla connections, are you more interested in the world of Skull Island? Let us know how you feel about Kong: Skull Island in the rankings below!
Logan has achieved massive success in its two weeks in theaters. Besides earning an impressive box office haul, the film has become the #2 comic book movie of all time in our overall composite rankings; thanks to fans' personal rankings, it's also topped the list of The Best Comic Book movie of all time, according to our users!
Will you be seeing Logan again this weekend? Love the film? Then vote for it in our rankings database, below!
Once you've voted, come back early after opening weekend when we'll compare your ratings to the box office rankings, to see if fans got their due!
