Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life Pokes Fun At DC, Marvel Films

Today, Gilmore Girls fans rejoiced when the show's long-awaited revival hit Netflix. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life promises to give Lorelai and Rory a befitting ending after its controversial seventh season. The special miniseries is now streaming, and the episodes are throwback to favorite predecessors. In true Gilmore Girls style, the new episodes feature plenty of quippy pop culture references, and superheroes have not be immune to Stars Hollow.

The first episode of the Gilmore Girls revival isn't shy with its pop culture reverence, and it takes both DC Films and Marvel Studios to bat. In "Winter," both Lorelai and Rory reference Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Lorelai is seen speaking to her daughter Rory about a phone booth in town, and she says, "There's a debate going on wheather to take the phone booth out."

Not missing a beat, Rory jokes, "But where would Superman change when he comes to save our town from Ben Affleck?" Lorelai laughs and says she made the "same excellent point" about the plans.

Towards the end of the episode, Lorelai returns to the world of superheroes when she turns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The mother is talking about someone who she finds utterly forgettable, and she's say, "He's like a superhero, but his power is you can't remember him no matter how much time you spend with him. Kind of like every Marvel movie ever."

Ouch. So, maybe the last jab was a bit more punchy than Marvel fans may like.

There are plenty of other contemporary pop culture references stowed away in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. The show references HBO's Game of Thrones when it casually mentions Khaleesi and Whitewalkers. The revival also uses Hamilton, the Kardashians, Lena Dunham, and more to reconnect with audiences who've been separated from Gilmore Girls for year now.

If you have not kept up with the Gilmore Girls revival, then you should know the critically praised miniseries has been a long-awaited one. The series follows the original cast as they live through one year in Stars Hollow. Talent like Milo Ventimiglia, Jared Padalecki, Melissa McCarthy, Sean Gunn, and more feature in the revival.
