A new trailer has been released for the Gus Van Sant film "The Sea Of Trees" starring Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey and "The Impossible" actress Naomi Watts.

The movie previously premiered at Cannes festival in 2015 with audiences and critics alike expecting the film to be a major awards contender. However, no one could have predicted just how poorly the movie would end up being received by those in attendance. The movie received awful reviews, and was hailed as the biggest disaster of Cannes that year.

In light of the negative reception to the film, many wondered whether the movie would even see the light of day in theaters. According to IndieWire, Lionsgate and Roadside had already purchased distribution rights prior to the film having such a horrible premiere. Both companies began backpedaling on releasing it after the negative reception, but A24 came along to give the movie another chance with an August 2016 release in theaters.

The official synopsis for "The Sea of Trees" reads: "Matthew McConaughey stars as Arthur Brennan, an American professor who travels to Japan in the midst of a personal crisis. As he wanders through a mysterious forest with a dark past, he experiences flashbacks of his fraught but loving relationship with his wife, Joan (Naomi Watts), and meets an enigmatic stranger, Takumi (Ken Watanabe), who is lost and injured. Arthur devotes himself to saving Takumi and returning him home to safety, and the two embark on a spiritual, life-changing journey of friendship, discovery, and healing."

"The Sea Of Trees" hits theaters and digital platforms on August 26.

Do you think the movie will be as bad as the critics and the Cannes festival audience made it sound?
