Matthew McConaughey's adventure drama Gold has been given a December 25 release by TWC-Dimension. In the upcoming film, the 46-year-old Oscar winner portrays a modern-day prospector who, in a desperate attempt to catch a lucky break, sets off to find gold in the uncharted jungle of Indonesia with a similarly ambitious geologist, portrayed by Edgar Ramirez.

Stephen Gaghan, also known for Syriana, directed the film with the script being written by John Zinman and Patrick Massett, according to Variety. Gold was financed by Black Bear Pictures and Black Bear's Teddy Schwarzmann. HWY 61's Michael Nozik served as producers alongside John Zinman, Patrick Massett, and Matthew McConaughey. The executive producers are HWY 61 partner Paul Haggis, Richard Middleton and Black Bear's Ben Stillman.

Also starring in the film is Bryce Dallas Howard, who portrays the longtime girlfriend of McConaughey's character. The relationship is strained when the hunt for gold brings McConaughey and Howard's characters to their breaking point. Actors Corey Stoll, Toby Kebbell, Bruce Greenwood and Stacy Keach also appear in the movie.

As of now, Gold is the only movie scheduled for a Christmas Day release, as December 25 falls on a Sunday this year. Disney's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens nine days earlier on December 16 as does Will Smith drama Collateral Beauty.

For the remainder of 2016, the TWC company has three other movies slated for release. The Founder, starring Michael Keaton as McDonald's founder Ray Krock opens on August 5. The boxing flick starring Robert Duran, titled Hands of Stone, is due on August 26. Lastly, Lion, a Thanksgiving movie about an Indian boy who makes the journey back home after being adopted by an Australian couple is scheduled for a November 25th release.
