With The Legend of Tarzan hitting theaters this weekend, Samuel L. Jackson will be appearing on the big screen for the first time in 2016.

The Legend of Tarzan is very much a re-imagining of the iconic character. It sees Alexander Skarsgard's portrayal of the character called from his life in London back to his home in the jungle to investigate the activities at a mining encampment. The film is packed with talent, with impressive and acclaimed actors in key roles alongside Jackson such as Margot Robbie and Christoph Waltz, who Jackson worked with previously for Django Unchained.

"It was great to get back in the saddle with people like Christoph [Waltz]," Jackson says. "I've always like Alex [Skarsgard] and Margot [Robbie] is great. So, we had a great cast. And to have David Yates in charge, a man who knows so much about making great films and a man who knows about making films in a certain way was really great because he had a very good idea of what he wanted to do and how he wanted to set the tone for this film and what our relationships were and he was able to convey that very concisely and clearly."

One of the things audiences may notice while watching The Legend of Tarzan (or even its trailers) is the impressive set design. While the gorillas and most animals may computerized, much of the jungles are real. Massive sets were built in Warner Brothers' London studios for the film, earning Jackson's approval.

"It was kind of awesome to be in a temperature controlled, bug free jungle and see the movie and go, 'Wow, it looks like we were really there,'" Jackson says.

Tarzan being Jackson's first time on the screen in 2016 is a result of the actor being sidelined for Marvel's epic super hero brawl in Captain America: Civil War earlier this year. Whether or not Nick Fury could have actually fit into the film (let alone its airport battle scene) is a little funky to picture but Jackson certainly wanted a piece of the action. "Not my fault," Jackson says when we asked why he didn't suit up as Nick Fury for Civil War, adding, "I tried. They wouldn't let me!"

With the red carpet being a Warner Brothers event, all of the Suicide Squad was on hand promoting their film which arrives in theaters this August. We took the opportunity to ask Jackson if he, a Marvel veteran, had a message for the DC anti-heroes. "I wish them all the success in the world so we can continue to make these films and make audiences happy," the actor asserts.

The Legend of Tarzan is now playing in theaters.
