Eli Roth, the "Splat Pack" director best known for bloody horror movies like Hostel and The Green inferno, will direct MGM and Paramount's Death Wish remake. The project has been stuck in development hell for some time. Bruce Willis is attached to star in the film. Roger Birnbaum will produce.

The original Death Wish is a 1974 film that starred Charles Bronson as a gritty, no holds barred vigilante on a revenge mission after his wife is murdered and his daughter is sexually assaulted. The film was loosely based on Brian Garfield's 1972 novel of the same name. The film was controversial at the time but reinvigorated Bronson's career and spawned four sequels.

The Death Wish remake originally was to be directed by Joe Carnahan, but Carnahan departed in 2012. He was replaced by Israeli directors Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, but they also dropped out before production could begin. The current script for the film is written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karazewski.

Roth's film resume includes Cabin Fever, Hostel, Thanksgiving, Hostel: Part II, and Endangered Species. Roth has been trying to expand horizons beyond the horror genre, dipping his toes into more mainstream, big budget studio films. His most recent film is Knock Knock, a thriller starring Keanu Reeves. He was also attached to direct the Warner Bros. monster movie Meg but dropped out over creative differences. He will reprise his role as host of Discovery's late night Shark Week talk show, Shark After Dark, beginning June 26.
