Stephanie Meyer Announces Gender-Swapped Twilight Story

Twilight author Stephanie Meyer has announced a big change coming to the Twilight series in honor of its 10th anniversary.

Not only is there a 10th anniversary copy of the Twilight books, but Meyer is also including an edition of the book where the genders will swap, titled Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined. "I wanted to do something fun for the 10th anniversary and the publisher wanted like a foreword and I thought, 'Well, maybe something more interesting,'" Meyer said on Good Morning America.

The new version of Twilight will be told from the perspective of Beau, the male equivalent of the Bella Swan character made famous by Kirsten Stewart's silver screen portrayal.

According to Meyer, the story is mostly the same as its original version, but as you get further into the story, the changes become larger and larger thanks to varied personalities. ""I wonder if it will change how people look at Bella a little bit, to see her as him," Meyer said on GMA. "I do feel like it's really very much the same thing so I guess my hope is that maybe the younger readers will be reintroduced because a lot of my readers, you know, they're all 10 years older now and so there's a whole new generation."

GMA asked Meyer if she could see the altered version of Twilight becoming a movie following the successful run with five blockbuster movies, but Meyer replied, "I don't really see that happening and a lot of the people I'd put in it would be like Grace Kelly so it's a little too late for some of my first choices." Beau likely won't get a franchise of his own, Meyer added, "I think that this is just one version with Beau."

The new, 10th anniversary edition of Twilight is on shelves in bookstores today.
