Terminator Genisys still has some life left in it as Chinese audiences flocked to see it yesterday in record numbers.

The fifth installment in the Terminator franchise struggled at the domestic box office, opening in third-place with $43.2M in its first 5-days and finishing up with $89.1M. But over in China, the film grossed $27M in just one day, which is the fourth best one-day tally for an American film, behind Transformers 2 ($30m), Avengers 2 ($33.9m), and Furious 7 ($63m).

Since late-June, China has been in an unofficial "summer blackout," when Hollywood films are put on hold so that homegrown films can take center stage. So, pent-up interest in Hollywood films could be the reason for Terminator Genisys' overwhelming success. The last U.S. film open in the Middle Kingdom was Jurassic World.

The boost from China now gives Terminator Genisys a worldwide total of $353M, and it could end up with over $500M when its run in China concludes. Think of this, Jurassic World opened its first day in China with $17.7M — $10M less than Terminator — and finished its China run with $228.7M.
